With over one million books sold worldwide, Sawday's guides have been championing excellence, character and sustainability for over 10 years. In 1994, after ten years of running his own travel company, Alastair Sawday turned to publishing guidebooks. This move was a direct result of his personal frustration with the robotic nature of the write-ups in travel guides then on the market--their preoccupation with trouser presses, coat hangers, and "all mod cons." In rejecting what he saw as the clip-board mentality, Sawday's approach was selective: to include only those accommodations that were "special places to stay" and then to present information about them in a way that was accessible, honest, and fun to read.

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is America's oldest conservation and recreation organization. The Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Northeast. AMC believes that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. In this tradition, AMC Books' publishing program spans a wide range of outdoor recreational topics in its guide books, such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, skiing, and snowshoeing. Bradt Travel Guides are aimed squarely at the mature but adventurous traveler. Over the last 30 years the original hiking guides have been replaced by ground-breaking country guides offering in-depth information on culture and natural history, alongside the nuts and bolts of where to stay and what to see. Bradt's popular Eccentric series brings the company into the mainstream while maintaining their hallmark offbeat angle.

Bradt Travel Guides commissions authors who are not only excellent writers but who can convey their enthusiasm for their favorite places in the printed word. They have won numerous awards in the last few years: the British Guild of Travel Writers' prize for the best guidebook went to Madagascar in 2000 and to Paris, Lille and Brussels in 2002, while Eccentric America has netted both the 2001 award for the best travel guide by the North American Travel Journalists Association and the coveted Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Award in 2002.

Bradt authors support responsible travel, with advice not only on minimum impact but also on how to give something back through local charities. Thus a true synergy is achieved between enjoying adventurous travel away from the tourist hordes and enabling the local people or wildlife to benefit from the visit.

Jonglez Publishing is a French publisher founded in 2002 by Thomas Jonglez, with offices in Paris and Italy.

Preferring not to compete with existing guidebooks, Thomas decided to adopt an original style, creating a new type of guidebook. By definition, his books are written by local residents and only showcase places not found in traditional guidebooks. The target audience is residents themselves, who can discover or rediscover their city, as well as curious travelers who may already know the city or region.

His first guidebook, Bruxelles insolite et secret (Secret Brussels), was published in 2003 and received excellent reviews from residents and travelers alike... Today Jonglez Publishing has over 60 titles in print and available in six languages.

New Holland (Publishers) Ltd. was founded in May 1987. Although headquartered in London, England, they have always had close editorial and marketing links with many further-flung parts of the world. They run editorial offices in Cape Town, South Africa, Sydney, Australia and Auckland New Zealand and like to think that their Globetrotter guides and maps to African and ANZ destinations offer the North American visitor that little bit "extra" in terms of local knowledge and local expertise. They like their authors to have an intimate knowledge of the destinations they write about, and so Globetrotter authors too are based all over the world, from Bangkok to Brisbane, Cape Town to Kuala Lumpur. These long lines of communication can complicate their book schedules, but we think it's worth it! Globetrotter travel guides and maps burst on to the UK market in January 1995, and were launched in North America by Globe Pequot one year later. They now have more than 100 guides, maps, and atlases in print. They'll be continuing to seek out unusual and exotic destinations to publish books about, and knowledgeable local authors to write them.

Trailblazer publishes route guides for the adventurous traveler. The company was started in 1991 by traveler and author, Bryn Thomas. In his travels since the early 1980s he has used a lot of guidebooks but has often found that, for the places that interest him most, the guides available are too generalized in their coverage or else they do not exist at all.

Trailblazer firmly believes that a good guidebook must have good maps, specifically tailored to the reader's needs, and they've become known for their very detailed mapping. These guides are strong on practical information but do not neglect the cultural background. They give you all the best accommodation and eating options and advise on what's worth seeing and what's better to avoid. They tell you how to get there, what to pack, and what to read before you go. There's comprehensive background information on history, climate, food, and the people. Detailed sections are included on the environment, particularly in the trekking guides, each of which has a detailed Minimum Impact Trekking chapter.

Above all, however, they believe that a guidebook should inspire the reader to travel and encourage him or her to interact with local people. Their guides are entertaining as well as informative. In the words of one reviewer, Trailblazer guides are examples of, "Good guides (that) read like a novel and get you packing in no time".
